Rising 502 feet above bedrock, this dam impounds the waters of the Green River to form Flaming Gorge Reservoir, which extends as far as 91 miles to the north and has a capacity of nearly 4 million acre-feet of water. Flaming Gorge County means a wide range of year-round recreation, breath-taking scenery, abundant wildlife, and classic frontier history. The area's centerpiece is Flaming Gorge Reservoir, a 91-mile lake offering superb boating and trophy fishing. In 1968, the lake, along with the surrounding area in southern Wyoming and Northeastern Utah, was designated a National Recreation Area to preserve its natural beauty and enhance its many recreational opportunities.
